On March 29th, my day started off on a positive note – feeling happy and grateful to be alive. I was even chatting with one of my favorite relatives, a fit and lovely soul who rises early for morning walks. However, an unexpected call changed my mood for the rest of the day as it reminded me of the loss of my baby brother in a motorcycle accident back in 2020.
That was until I decided that enough was enough. I didn’t like the feeling and so I did a Quigong workout to destress and relieve myself of the anxiety I was experiencing. This is a powerful exercise I recently discovered and have been practicing for a few months. After the session, I felt more relaxed. I could not believe that a 20-minutes workout could reenergize me and put me in a better mood so quickly, considering what I was going through.
This is why I decided to share the wonderful benefits of Quigong with others. In this article, we will explore the benefits, five elements, and the basic principles of Quigong. I will also share a little information about who should not practice Qigong, and whether it can be self-taught. I am also sharing a short tribute to my late baby brother who inspired this post.

The Benefits of Quigong
Quigong also spelled Qigong (pronounced chi-gong), is a Chinese workout and healing exercise that dates back thousands of years. It includes a combination of respiration techniques, meditation, and actions that are designed to promote the flow of energy, or Qi, all through the body. The exercise is known for its ability to enhance bodily fitness, lessen stress and anxiety, and promote spiritual growth.
Quigong has numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. Some of the most commonly reported benefits of Quigong include:
- Stress Reduction – Quigong has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels by calming the mind and promoting relaxation.
- Improved Immune Function – Regular practice of Quigong has been linked to improved immune function and increased resistance to illness.
- Increased Flexibility – Quigong movements are gentle and slow, making them an ideal exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. The practice helps to increase flexibility and mobility, which can reduce the risk of injury.
- Improved Balance – Quigong movements also promote balance and coordination, making it an effective practice for older adults or people with balance issues.
- Reduced Chronic Pain – Quigong has been shown to reduce chronic pain and improve the quality of life for people with conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis.
The Five Elements of Quigong
The Five Elements of Quigong are a set of principles that guide the practice of Quigong. They are:
- Wood – represents growth, flexibility, and renewal.
- Fire – represents warmth, enthusiasm, and joy.
- Earth – represents stability, grounding, and nourishment.
- Metal – represents clarity, strength, and resilience.
- Water – represents calmness, adaptability, and flow.

Who Should Not Practice Qigong?
While Quigong is generally considered safe for most people, there are some cases where it may not be appropriate. People with the following conditions should consult a healthcare provider before starting a Quigong practice:
- Pregnancy – some movements may not be appropriate during pregnancy.
- Severe mental health conditions – Quigong may exacerbate symptoms in people with severe mental health conditions.
- Joint injuries – some movements may aggravate joint injuries or conditions.
- Severe respiratory conditions – people with severe respiratory conditions may find it difficult to perform some breathing exercises.
Is it Possible to Learn Qigong on Your Own?
Although it is possible to learn Qigong techniques from reading books or watching videos, it is highly recommended that beginners seek out a certified instructor. A mentor can ensure that you maintain proper posture and alignment while also providing guidance on how to customize your routine to your individual needs.
When I am practicing I watch videos on YouTube, especially those by Lee Holden. For over 25 years Lee Holden has devoted his career to helping others learn the powerful principles of Qi Gong and I have been learning a lot from him.
